Lesson 4: What Comes Next? (Sequencing Numbers)

Aims:

  • Practice sequencing numbers up to 10.
  • Build understanding of what number comes next in a sequence.

Goals:

  • Children put numbers 1–10 in correct order.
  • Children identify the next number in a sequence.

Objectives:

  • Arrange number cards or objects in order from 1 to 10.
  • Predict or state what comes before or after a given number.

Transformation:

  • Move from isolated number knowledge to understanding number order.

Foundation:

  • Recognition of numbers up to 10.

What Happens Next:

  • Prepares for patterning, skip counting, and simple operations.

Skill Progression:

  • Number sequencing
  • Predicting and reasoning

Sample Activities:

  • Number Line: Arrange cards or objects in order.
  • What’s Next? Game: Given a number, say or show what comes next (or before).
  • Missing Number: Fill in missing numbers in a sequence.

Assessment:

  • Observe sequencing skills and ability to identify the next number.

Materials:

  • Number cards (1–10)
  • Visual number lines
  • Toys or manipulatives for sequencing

Differentiation:

  • Use large visuals or hands-on materials.
  • Provide number chants or songs for reinforcement.

Integration:

  • Reference order during daily routines (lining up, calendar, passing out items).
