Lesson 2: Music, Movement, and First “Stories”

Each night, Aiden’s parents sing a bedtime song, and he soon starts to coo along and wave his arms, knowing it’s time to settle down.  This comforting routine connects music, memory, and family togetherness.  This supports language arts development because music and stories introduce rhythm, repetition, and the joy of language—all key ingredients for later reading and communication skills.

Aims:
Nurture rhythm, memory, and social connection through music and simple story-sharing.

Goals:

  • Build anticipation and memory with music.
  • Strengthen bonds through shared storytelling.

Objectives:

  • Move or babble to familiar songs
  • Show excitement when hearing a favorite story or song.

Activities List:

  • Sing the same song each night before bed and encourage baby’s participation (clapping, cooing).
  • Tell a simple story with toys or pictures and watch for baby’s responses.
  • Create a “family band” with safe household items and play together.

Materials:
Favorite lullabies, baby-safe instruments or household items (pots, wooden spoons), simple board books

Differentiation:

  • For quieter babies, use gentle rhythms and soft voices.
  • For babies who love movement, add dancing or bouncing.

Integration:

  • Make music part of daily routines: bath, bedtime, playtime.
  • Use family stories to connect baby to loved ones.

Parent Simulation Tip:
Let your baby “choose” the song by watching their responses—repeat their favorite!
