Take Action When You See It Happening
- Walk Away
People who verbally abuse or bully want an audience. If you leave, you take away their power. If no one listens, who are they talking to?
Activity: Next time you hear verbal abuse or bullying, quietly remove yourself from the group. Notice how this changes the situation.
- Speak the Truth
Sometimes, people who bully twist the story or tell lies. If you know the truth and feel safe, share it.
You can also speak privately with the person being discussed and encourage them. Remember, don’t let fear keep you from standing up for what’s right.
Activity: Think of a time you could have spoken the truth. What would you have said? Write it down.
- Don’t Join In
Even if you’re just listening and not talking, you’re giving the bully what they want—an audience. If you agree, laugh, or stay, you may be seen as part of the problem. If you disagree, walk away right away.
Activity: Role-play in your mind or with a friend: If someone tries to pull you into verbal bullying, what could you say or do to avoid joining in?
- Get Help or Be Help
If the person being verbally abused or bullied is present, support them. Stand with them, or if there’s no danger, help them leave the situation. If things are serious or you feel unsafe, get help from a trusted adult.
Activity: List three trusted adults you could go to for help if you or someone else is being bullied or verbally abused.
