Lesson Goals

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Read and understand Genesis 1:1–2:3
  • Discuss the meaning and context of the creation story
  • Reflect on what “good creation” means for their lives
  • Respect different perspectives within the Christian faith
  • Express insights through creative or service projects

Materials Needed

  • Bible
  • Journal or notebook
  • Art supplies (optional)
  • Device with internet access (optional)

Lesson Outline

  1. Opening (5–10 minutes)
    • Welcome & Prayer
    • Icebreaker: “What’s your favorite thing in nature and why?”
    • Differentiation/Accessibility: Allow students to write, draw, or speak their responses. Use audio for Scripture reading if needed.
  2. Scripture Reading (10–15 minutes)
    • Read Genesis 1:1–2:3 (out loud, silently, or using an audio Bible)
    • Mark words or verses that stand out
  3. Observation & Understanding (10–15 minutes)
    • What happens in the passage? Who is involved?
    • List key words or repeated phrases
    • Prompts: What surprises you? What questions do you have?
  4. Interpretation & Discussion (15–20 minutes)
    • What does this passage mean?
    • What’s God teaching here?
    • Share different viewpoints within the Christian tradition
    • Discussion Prompts:
      • How would you explain this to a friend?
      • How might this have sounded to the first listeners?
      • What does this show about God or creation?
  5. Application & Reflection (15–20 minutes)
    • How does this connect with your life?
    • What action or prayer might God be prompting?
    • Write or share a personal reflection, prayer, or creative response
  6. Prayer & Commitment (5–10 minutes)
    • Group or silent prayer
    • Invite students to pray or write a prayer
  7. Assessment & Review (5–10 minutes)
    • What’s one thing you learned?
    • How will you remember or apply this lesson?
  8. Extension/Enrichment (Optional)
    • Suggest further reading or creative projects (poster, poem, service, etc.)
