Faith and Leadership in Business, Part 1: Decision Fatigue—Trusting God’s Perspective
Constant decision-making wears on your mind and spirit, especially when you want to honor God in each choice. Psychologists describe decision fatigue as the mental exhaustion that builds after making many choices, leading to decreased self-control, impulsive decisions, or avoidance of decisions altogether.
As Dr. Henry Cloud, leadership expert and author, notes, “Great leaders understand that decision fatigue is real, and that true wisdom often comes from pausing, grounding ourselves, and seeking guidance beyond our own understanding.”
Every day, leaders make decisions that ripple out to impact their teams and organizations. The weight can be overwhelming, leading to doubt and exhaustion. Jesus reminds us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, ESV)
Personal Story
One time, I faced a tough decision about a team member’s future. They needed guidance, but I felt exhausted by the thought of supporting them amidst my own overflowing responsibilities. I wrestled with the choice, prayed, and ultimately, the Holy Spirit led me to keep them on and invest in their growth. Though it was a tough ride, eventually, I started to see the growth. Thankfully, I live by the principle that God sees the entire picture—He knows the future, the impact our decisions will have, and the lessons we and others will learn along the way. By trusting Him, I found peace even in uncertainty.
A Step-by-Step Approach for Difficult Decisions
- Pray about your situation and ask God for wisdom.
- Seek counsel from trusted advisors or mentors who share your values.
- Take time to reflect on the options in light of your faith and principles.
- Make your decision, trusting that God will guide you through the outcome.
This process can help bring clarity and peace as you navigate challenging choices.
Scripture
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” — James 1:5 (ESV)
Reflection
Pause and seek God’s perspective. Trust that He sees the big picture and will guide you—and those you lead—on the right path.
