Emerge!
Empowerment University for Children aims to enhance the learning and development of the whole child. The Emergers group was specially created to provide resources for children ages nine to eleven (9-11). At this age (preteen), children better understand who they are and what they like and dislike. They have become more independent and want to voice their opinion as they better understand the world around them. As they become more aware of their world, friendships, identity, and achievement become more critical. The more they experience, the more their awareness grows, providing the opportunity to determine who they will be in particular situations—laying the foundation for who they will eventually become. This emerging awareness leads to their being aptly called the Emergers.
Learning Basics
As they become more aware of the world, they need stability, security, and room to grow. They like increased responsibility and want to be helpful to their daily community. This membership includes the following types of resources.
- Spiritual
- Academic
- Life Skills
Spiritual Life
One such example from the Bible is the boy with two fish and five barley loaves. When Jesus asked the disciples to provide food to the people, the little boy willingly gave his small meal to Jesus. In Jesus’ hand, that meal became much. It fed over five thousand people.* Like the gift the little boy gave, whatever skills, abilities, and gifts your child has can be used for Jesus and enrich their overall spiritual experience and that of their community.
Academic and Life Skills
For school, 9 to 11-year-olds should have a solid grasp of core subjects like math, reading, and writing, and be able to apply these skills to more complex tasks. They should be able to perform multi-digit addition and subtraction, understand fractions, and read and comprehend longer sentences. Key skills also include improved reasoning, a stronger ability to organize and plan, and the capacity for more independent thought.
